Restore or Copy Contacts from Kies to CM9 rom (Samsung phones). Convert .spb to .vcf

I've been experiencing this, it kept me awake for few hours just to solve this. Damn !! Now I am at work and I am so freaking sleepy. Here goes....

As we all know, CM9 won't work with Kies. Therefore, you cannot restore or sync your backup contacts. When you backup your contacts via Kies, it will create a file (exp: Contacts001.spb). To restore this file, you need to sync it with Kies. With CM9 installed (in my case I am using SGS 2 i9100g), it won't sync at all.

You need Kies in you computer to solve this.

* DONT CONNECT YOUR PHONE
** IGNORE THE CONNECTED DEVICE IN THE IMAGES BELOW

1. Create a new folder on your desktop. Any name will do or leave it as New Folder.

2. Open Kies >>> On your left look for Library >>> Click Contacts

3. If you have made your contacts backup using Kies, the name of the file will appear in the box.
    (See image below)

4. Open the .spb file which was created during your backup process with Kies. (Ignore the connected devices section in this image)

 5. Double click the .spb file and the backup list will appear (See image below)
     (Ignore the connected devices section)

6. Click Save As

7. A window will appear asking you where to save the file. Click the folder that you have created in your desktop and save it as contacts.vcf . Yeah, I know the default extension is .spb. Nevermind ignore it and type the extension yourself. Just save it to whatever name you like and put the extension .vcf (Exp: contacts.vcf)

8. So now, when you open your folder where you have saved the .vcf file. You will see all your contacts vCards. If you got 100 contacts...then 100 vCards will appear. In other words, this is the method to convert .spb file to vCards which you can import the vCards to your phone via CM9.

9. Now connect your phone via USB, copy the folder (which you have all the vCards) to the phone's directory.

10. In your phone, go to contacts >>> import/export >>> import from storage

11. The phone will copy your contacts, just leave it like that. If there's a lot of copied notifications and you cannot clear it (located in the same area of the baterry) or UI's error just check the several last contacts in your phone. If the contacts already in your phone then you can reboot your phone. That's it, now you have all your contacts back in your phone with CM installed.

  2. Excellent solution, thank-you very much. Worth pointing out that this only works with the PC version of Kies... the Mac version doesn't show 'Contacts' in the library or allow you to open the .spb file without connecting a phone via Kies beforehand.

  15. Thanks man. I too had to search quite a bit until I found your post. Seems like importing takes quite a long time. Been 30 minutes and still shows as importing contacts. I have about 300 odd contacts.

  16. Anonymous : Sometimes...the process keep on going even though it's already completed. If it took too long..just abort the process and see whether all the contacts are in the folder or in your contact. In my case...when i transfer the vcard...the process didnt stop. So I abort the process and the contact were all in my phone...

  35. I know that this post is old but I am having problems to do this from a spb generated from Kies3. Any other way to do this? When I try to import it show 100% but keep running/loading endless.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Diego : Yeah it is an old post but people still using this method. I understand the process still loading and running endlessly. Just put a stop to it...or just cancel and look in your contacts. The contacts will be there...just like mine. Like mine, the process never ended...:)) Cheers.
